The festival began with a screening of Perfect Days, a Japanese-German production by Wim Wenders, created as a "meditation on the simplicity and beauty of life."
Marcin Pieńkowski, the festival's director, described the main character as "a man of few words, introverted, yet filled with love for the world and others."
Another Wenders film, Anselm, produced using 3D technology, is also part of the festival.
The festival will showcase more than 250 films across 600 screenings, including nearly 200 full-length movies.
These include films from this year's Cannes Festival, such as The Pot-au- Feu, directed by Trần Anh Hùng, awarded Best Director at Cannes; Hirokazu Kore-eda's Monster, awarded Best Script; Turkish production About Dry Grasses by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, recipient of Best Actress Award; and the Finnish comedy-drama Fallen Leaves by Aki Kaurismäki, the Jury Prize winner.
The festival audience in Wrocław will also have the opportunity to watch the Grand Jury Prize winner from Venice, Alice Diop's feature debut Saint Omer, and Jafar Panahi's No Bears, which won the Special Jury Prize in Venice.
Films that won awards at the Sundance and Rotterdam festivals will also be featured.
Notably, the program includes Jean-Luc Godard's last work, and the latest films by renowned directors such as Marco Bellocchio, Sacha Polak, Angela Schanelec, Lav Diaz, Kelly Reichardt, Joanna Hogg, and Christian Petzold.
As in previous years, the festival will host retrospectives of renowned directors, including a review of films by Indian cinema icon Satyajit Ray, French director Alice Diop, Chinese director Wang Bing, and Alain Robbe-Grillet.
The festival will feature the New Horizons International Film Competition, with 12 films competing, including Imago by Olga Chajdas, representing Polish cinema.
The New Horizons International Film Festival is one of Poland's most important annual cinema events, and includes music performances and visual arts exhibitions.
It will conclude on July 30, with Passages by Ira Sachs, a hit at the Sundance and Berlinale festivals.
