The jury's verdict was announced late on Saturday after the event’s finals, in which all six participants performed Chopin’s Concerto in E minor.

Born in Toronto in 2002, Guo is a student at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in his hometown. He has performed in North America and several European countries, and has won top prizes in many competitions.

He has been named one of CBC’s 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians Under 30.

In addition to claiming the top prize in the Warsaw competition, Guo received a special award from public broadcaster Polish Radio for best performance of Chopin’s mazurkas.

Second prize went to Poland’s Piotr Pawlak.

A graduate of the Music Academy in Gdańsk, northern Poland, Pawlak, 25, has to his credit several awards at international competitions, including first prize at last year's 5th International Maj Lind Piano Competition in Helsinki.

He has been dubbed “a mathematician at the keyboard,” a reference to the fact that before graduating in piano performance he earned a degree in mathematics.

Third prize was shared by Angie Zhang from the United States and Yonghuan Zhong from China.

The prize-winning pianists will perform at a concert at the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall on Sunday night.

The International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments was launched in 2018. Its first edition was won by Poland’s Tomasz Ritter.

The event is organized by the Warsaw-based National Chopin Institute.
