Oscar-winning set designer Allan Starski begins his 80s

Allan Starski, Polish designer and set decorator who won in 1993 an Academy Award for Steven Spielberg’s "Schindler’s List" celebrated his 81st birthday on New Year’s Day.  He shared the accolade for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration with Ewa Braun.

Starski was born in Warsaw on January 1, 1943, as the son of Ludwik Starski, a popular song and screenwriter of Jewish descent. In 1969, he graduated from the Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw, and four years later made his debut as a film production designer.

In addition to Schindler’s List, Starski’s credits include such masterpieces as Andrzej Wajda’s Man of Marble, Man of Iron and The Maids of Wilko,  Agnieszka Holland’s Europe, Europe and Washington Square, and Roman Polański’s The Pianist and Oliver Twist.

His latest projects are the American films Hannibal Rising by Peter Webber and Snow Princess by Mark Roemmich.

Starski’s honours include the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Reborn Poland and the Gold Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit. (mk/pm)
