The award, presented by the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), recognizes her significant contributions to cinema.
On the same day, Szumowska will personally present her latest film Woman Of..., made in collaboration with Michał Englert.
Woman Of... tells the poignant story of Aniela, born in a male body and seeking gender correction, reflecting years of research and interaction with the transgender community in Poland.
The film features performances by Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik and Joanna Kulig, among others. The cast includes transgender individuals, playing both trans and cisgender roles.
Szumowska and Englert hope their film will foster understanding and support for transgender individuals and advocate for legal protections.
The FIPRESCI Platinum Award, first awarded in 2015 in Bari to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the foundation of FIPRESCI, has honored renowned filmmakers such as Alan Parker, Costa-Gavras and Andrzej Wajda
The Sofia International Film Festival has previously awarded this special prize to distinguished filmmakers including Béla Tarr and Agnieszka Holland.
Szumowska's recognition by FIPRESCI adds to her impressive list of accolades, solidifying her status among the leading figures in contemporary European cinema.
Her films, such as Elles with Juliette Binoche and 33 Scenes from Life, have achieved international distribution and critical acclaim, including nominations for the European Film Awards.
Szumowska's other awards include the Silver Bear for Mug at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival and the Berlinale 2015 Best Director award for Body.
Woman Of... will see theatrical release in Poland on April 5, with broad distribution already lined up throughout Europe.
