The exhibition is part of events to commemorate 170 years since Malczewski's birth. It aims to pay tribute to the artist, who was a leading figure in the Young Poland art movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Malczewski's symbolist paintings highlighted the rebirth of the Romantic tradition in Poland at the time.

He drew inspiration mainly from Polish art and folk traditions, supplementing these with motifs from mythology and the Bible.

Polish martyrdom, Romantic ideas of independence, local folklore and death were other recurrent motifs in Malczewski’s oeuvre.

He was also renowned for his self-portraits, totalling some 100 in his output. Most of his self-portraits depict himself surrounded by characters from his works.

Malczewski died in 1929 in Kraków, southern Poland, at the age of 75.

Agnieszka Bielawska has the story.
