Polish news outlet Onet.pl has reported on the background of an investigation concluded in early June concerning officials from the previous right-wing populist Law and Justice (PiS) government.

The case involves former Polish minister Jadwiga Emilewicz, who faces allegations that she pressured local officials to approve a multi-million-zloty settlement in favour of a company linked to the Polish Catholic Church during the PiS administration.

“When the Polish Catholic Church was losing a major compensation case against the state under the PiS government, Jadwiga Emilewicz stepped in,” Onet.pl revealed, citing its own sources.

According to the report, in 2021, Emilewicz - then aligned with Poland’s conservative ruling bloc - allegedly pressured staff at the regional governor’s office in Poznań, western Poland, to authorise the payment.

The politician is also said to have warned a reluctant government lawyer that he could face professional consequences if he refused to cooperate.

“Emilewicz’s intervention was a turning point - things suddenly moved quickly, and the Church-owned company received nearly 14 million zlotys (€3.29 million) from the state budget,” wrote Łukasz Cieśla, an investigative journalist specialising in criminal and legal affairs.

Further details are available in Cieśla’s full article on Onet.pl.
