Małgosia Turzańska was nominated in the costume design category for her work on Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao.

Among the other nominees in the category is Ruth E. Carter, who designed the costumes for Ryan Coogler’s musical horror film Sinners.

With 16 nominations, Sinners set an all-time Academy Awards record.

Born in Kraków, southern Poland, in 1980, Turzańska graduated in costume design from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and later continued her education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

She began her film career as an assistant to Polish director Agnieszka Holland on the 2009 feature Janosik: A True Story. Her credits as a costume designer include Maggie’s Plan (2015), The Green Knight (2021) and the Netflix series Stranger Things.

A New York resident since 2005, Turzańska became a US citizen in 2017.

Maciej Szczerbowski received an Oscar nomination in the animated short category. He is a co-director and co-writer of The Girl Who Cried Pearls, described as "a haunting fable about a girl overwhelmed by sorrow, the boy who loves her, and how greed leads good hearts to wicked deeds."

Born in 1971, Szczerbowski left Poland for Canada with his family in 1981, shortly before the communist government imposed martial law. He lives and works in Canada but considers himself a Polish artist.

In 2008, he previously earned an Oscar nomination for the animated short Madame Tutli-Putli.

The Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 15.
