The opera, titled Fuego fatuo (Will-o’-the-Wisp), was written between 1918 and 1919. It features a libretto by Spanish writer Maria Lejárraga and tells the story of a young composer, Leonardo, who is torn between his affection for the faithful and modest Clara and his fascination with the seductive Princess Lisa.

The score is based on music by Chopin, adapted and orchestrated by de Falla.

The manuscript of the three-act opera is preserved in the Manuel de Falla Archives in Granada.

Although written more than a century ago, Fuego fatuo has never been performed. A recent discovery of the complete libretto in Lejárraga’s collection has led to renewed interest in the opera.

The Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic has signed a letter of intent with Spanish partners in the project – the International Festival of Music and Dance in Granada, the Fundación Juan March in Madrid and the Teatro de la Zarzuela.

The project has received support from the Polish Institute in Madrid and the National Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw, with the production included in the official programme of events marking the centenary of the International Chopin Piano Competition in 2027.

Violetta Bielecka, director of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, has described the project as "exceptional both artistically and symbolically."

"We are delighted to be co-creating an international undertaking that will combine Chopin’s music with the Spanish operatic tradition," she said.

Miguel Ángel Marín, music director of the Fundación Juan March, has told the media that the premiere of de Falla’s opera in Poland will be a unique meeting of two great musical worlds.

"Given Manuel de Falla’s fascination with Fryderyk Chopin’s music, we were very keen to secure a Polish partner for this production, which would allow us to reflect the original spirit of de Falla’s work," he said.

Manuel de Falla died in 1946 at the age of 70. His diverse output includes orchestral, chamber and choral music, works for piano, ballet scores and operas.
