Titled Between Silence and a Whisper, the film is based on St. Faustina's life as recorded in her Diary and on unpublished recollections of sisters from her religious congregation.

Director Michał Kondrat told the media that the film is not a hagiographic portrait of St. Faustina.

"It shows her as a flesh-and-blood woman who plucks up the courage to continue a mission that surpasses her—in the face of fear, a terminal illness and complete misunderstanding from those around her," he said.

"It is a story from a hundred years ago about boundless trust in God and the message of Mercy, which today's world needs more than ever," he added.

The cast includes Polish actress Maria Kowalska as St. Faustina and American actor Neal McDonough as Father Michał Sopoćko, her spiritual director.

McDonough and his wife, Ruve McDonough, are executive producers of the film.

Cinematography is by Poland's Piotr Sobociński Jr., whose credits include the Oscar-nominated Corpus Christi and the recent Polish film The Doll.

British sound designer Tarn Willers, who won an Oscar for best sound for The Zone of Interest, is also part of the film's creative team.

Born Helena Kowalska in 1905, St. Faustina grew up in a poor farming family. At age 20, she joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, where she experienced visions of Christ, who asked her to paint an image of him bearing the words "Jesus, I Trust in You."

Sister Faustina recorded her mystical experiences in her notebooks. Published later as Diary of St. Faustina, the book has been translated into more than 80 languages.

Sister Faustina died of tuberculosis in 1938 at age 33. She was canonised by Pope John Paul II in 2000.
