The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2019 was awarded to Austrian author Peter Handke.
The top literary prize was not awarded last year following a scandal in the Swedish Academy, which chooses the winners.
“This is good news for Polish culture,” said Polish Culture Minister Piotr Gliński shortly after Tokarczuk was named as winner.
