Andrzej Duda said in a New Year's address that an independent and “efficiently governed” Poland, firmly embedded “in a united Europe,” was poised for a future of prosperity after a successful 2019.

Duda said in his message that 2019 was a time of unprecedented social “energy, ambition and enthusiasm,” with Poland standing “at the forefront of European countries” in terms of economic growth.

He added that 2019 marked a further increase in the standard of living for Polish families amid enhanced security for the nation as a whole.

“I trust that 2020 will be a year of victories and success” for Poland in various fields, Duda also said in his New Year's address, which was posted on his website on Tuesday evening.

Duda noted in his message that Poland will this year be marking the 100th anniversary of its victory over the Russian Bolsheviks in the 1920 Battle of Warsaw.

He said the landmark battle, part of the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921, “decided … the fate of the world 100 years ago."

The Battle of Warsaw, often described as the “Miracle of the Vistula,” is believed to have saved Poland’s newly regained independence after the end of World War I and prevented the Bolshevik revolution from spreading into western Europe.

Duda also said in his New Year's message that 2020 promised to be a year of big sporting events.

"We are hoping for victories for our football team during the Euro 2020 championships and we are also hoping for medals from Polish athletes during the Olympic Summer Games in Tokyo,” he said.

“We will be supporting the red-and-whites,” he added.

The president wished Poles “many personal victories and successes” in the new year.
