May 9 is Europe Day, initiated in 1964 by the Council of Europe and established in 1985 in the European Union to commemorate the Schuman Declaration which is considered to be at the fundament of the EU.The Day was devised as a special celebration of peace and unity in Europe.

In 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman gave a speech in Paris, setting out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe. A year later the European Coal and Steel Community was created.

In former years, Poles marked Europe Day with "Schuman parades" and events promoting European institutions. In 2020, because of the coronavirus pandemic, the celebrations have mostly moved online. This year, the EU has decided to specially honour those whose work is helping to get through the COVID-19 crisis.
