Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda will be the first foreign head of state to visit Poland since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nausėda and Polish President Andrzej Duda will take part in a ceremony unveiling a monument marking the Battle of Grunwald, when allied Polish and Lithuanian forces crushed the Knights of the Teutonic Order in what is considered to be one of the most significant military victories in Polish history.

Fought on July 15, 1410, the battle saw Polish King Władysław Jagiełło and his army of allied forces defeat the war machine of the Teutonic Knights, which had previously been regarded as invincible.

As well as attending ceremonies at the site of the battle in northern Poland, Duda and Nausėda will hold talks on bilateral relations, the coronavirus crisis and regional cooperation, Krzysztof Szczerski, the Polish president’s chief of staff, said ahead of the visit.

This year’s re-enactment of the Battle of Grunwald was cancelled by organisers amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

Duda on Tuesday handed Lithuanian Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis one of Poland’s highest state decorations – the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland – for his contribution to strengthening dialogue between the two countries.
