Established by UNESCO on 3 November 2011 during its 36th conference, the Day was first observed in 2012.
On World Radio Day 2021, UNESCO celebrates the 10th anniversary of this event and more than 110 years of radio.
As the organization writes on its webpage there are three sub-themes for WRD: "Evolution: The world changes, radio evolves – radio is resilient and sustainable; Innovation: The world changes, radio adapts and innovates- radio adapts to new technologies and remains the go-to medium of mobility, accessible everywhere and to everyone; Connection: The world changes, radio connects - radio services our society during natural disasters, socio-economic crises, epidemics, etc."
In a tweet, UNESCO adds: "Amid the #COVID19 crisis, radio has shown its capacity to bring us information & knowledge when we needed it the most. Let's celebrate today the power of radio!"
