Athletics: Seven medals for Poland on final day of European indoor champs

Poland won seven medals, one gold, two silver and four bronze, on the last day of competition at the 2021 European Athletics Indoor Championships, bringing its total medal haul on home turf to 10.

Poland’s Patryk Dobek took the gold in the men's 800m and countryman Mateusz Borkowski finished second to claim the silver in the same event at the Toruń Arena venue in the north-central Polish city of Toruń on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Joanna Jóźwik won the silver for Poland in the women's 800m, finishing ahead of countrywoman Angelika Cichocka, who grabbed the bronze.

Minutes earlier, Paweł Wiesiołek clinched the bronze in the men’s heptathlon, and Piotr Lisek added another in the men's pole vault.

A fourth bronze medal for Poland on Sunday came from the women’s 4x400 metres relay team of Natalia Kaczmarek, Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, Kornelia Lesiewicz and Aleksandra Gaworska.

Earlier in the championships, Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic claimed silver in the women’s 400 metres, Marcin Lewandowski finished second in the men's 1500m, and Michał Haratyk came in runner-up in the men's shot put.

With a total of 10 medals, one gold, five silver and four bronze, the Polish track-and-field team finished ninth in the overall medals table at the championships, which ended in Toruń on Sunday.

Poland topped the medals standings at the previous two European indoor championships in Belgrade, Serbia in 2017 and Glasgow in 2019.
