The plan comes as the two countries have resumed talks on joint energy projects as part of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership initiative, the biznesalert.pl website reported.

Executives from Poland's gas transmission company Gaz-System, state-owned refiner Lotos and gas and oil giant PGNiG were among those who took part in a recent energy workshop focusing on a "transition towards hydrogen and green gases,” the website reported.

Officials from the US Mission to the European Union and the US Department of Energy also took part in the virtual event, which brought together a number of EU and Eastern Partnership countries, according to biznesalert.pl.

The website said that hydrogen, renewable gases and biomethane would be the focus of several other workshops later this year.

Vitaliy Kushnirov from the Ukrainian energy ministry was quoted as saying that “the goal will be to talk about building a hydrogen market and raising funds for the development of these technologies.”

Kushnirov added, as quoted by the Polish website, that his country had a well-developed gas transmission system and was "investigating the possibility of transporting hydrogen" through its infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Germany and Russia have also started talks about potential hydrogen supplies to Europe, the Polish website reported.

It said Russia’s gas giant Gazprom has proposed using the controversial Nord Stream 2 pipeline for this purpose.

On April 20, Russian and German government officials signed a joint declaration of intent to work together on sustainable energy, according to the Polish website.

The Eastern Partnership, an initiative by Poland and Sweden, was launched in 2009 to forge closer political and economic ties between the EU and its eastern neighbours and to bring Ukraine and five other post-Soviet states closer to the bloc.

As part of their ambitious climate policies, EU countries aim to phase out crude oil and natural gas, replacing them with "carbon-free gases," mainly hydrogen, Poland's energetyka24.com website reported at the end of last year.

Poland’s largest refiner PKN Orlen is preparing to start producing hydrogen fuel in 2022, its CEO Daniel Obajtek announced last year.

He said in September that his company was investing to build its position as a regional leader in hydrogen technology.
