Known as szopka in Polish, the Christmas cribs come from a museum in Kraków, southern Poland, and are the work of local craftsmen and artisans.

The szopka tradition in Kraków dates back to the 19th century when the city’s masons and woodworkers started to make nativity scenes as a seasonal decoration in order to earn extra income during Christmas time.

A characteristic feature of the Kraków szopka is the use of the city’s historical buildings as a backdrop for the Nativity of Jesus.

In 2018, UNESCO added the traditional Kraków szopka to its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

The exhibition in Düsseldorf runs until January 30.
