Lewandowski was handed the award at a Polish Sports Personality of the Year gala in Warsaw on Saturday evening.

The 33-year-old, winner of the poll last year, had been seen as a strong favorite, so his victory came as little surprise, especially after he led Bayern to another German title.

"I want to say thank you to all Polish athletes as I'm proud of all Polish successes,” Lewandowski said during the award ceremony. “Poland has talent and huge potential to be on the top. I keep my fingers crossed for all athletes from my country," he added.

He noted that the award was particularly meaningful to him as he had been living abroad for 12 years, so he really appreciates a title won in his native country.

Lewandowski also took the chance to dispel rumours about his possible imminent retirement by declaring: “I don't want to do that and I don't even think about that."

In the poll Lewandowski prevailed over hammer thrower Anita Wlodarczyk, who took gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games, and speedway rider Bartosz Zmarzlik.

The Sports Personality of The Year is believed to be the most prestigious sport prize in Poland. It has been held annually since 1926 by the readers of the newspaper Przegląd Sportowy. The winner is the sportsperson, judged by a public vote, to have achieved the most in the previous year. (mo)
