Zbigniew Rau said in a tweet on Sunday that women and children affected by an "outbreak of hostilities" in Kyiv were in need of help.

Referring to his role as chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Rau called for "an immediate ceasefire to let evacuate suffering civilians and deliver humanitarian aid to the city."

All European Union member states joined the appeal, which was also supported by Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, Georgia, the Holy See, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Moldova, Norway, San Marino, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, Britain and the United States, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

Poland took over the rotating presidency of the OSCE from Sweden on January 1, with Rau taking a role as the organization’s Chairperson-in-Office.

This is the second time Poland is chairing the organization, with its previous turn at the helm in 1998.
