The two-way talks, officially known as intergovernmental consultations, were being led by Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Romania’s Nicolae Ciucă, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Major topics included regional defence and security, in addition to regional policy, bilateral cooperation and "issues on the EU agenda," according to Polish government spokesman Piotr Müller.

He told reporters that the talks were bringing together "the governments of the two largest countries on the eastern flank of NATO."

Both countries border on Ukraine and have provided humanitarian assistance and shelter to hundreds of thousands of refugees in the wake of Russia's invasion.

Previous such consultations between Poland and Romania were held in Bucharest in 2019 and in Warsaw in 2018, Müller said.
