Students began the tests with an exam in Polish. On Thursday, they will have their knowledge of mathematics assessed, and on Friday their foreign-language skills.
Students must take exams in three compulsory subjects. Most have opted to also take additional subjects, which are required to be admitted to universities, according to officials.
The matura exams are a rite of passage in Poland and determine teenagers’ future to a large degree.
They will be taken this month by around 290,000 secondary school students nationwide, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.
