Poland's Andrzej Duda and Hungary's Katalin Novák were expected to hold face-to-face talks in the Polish capital to discuss international sanctions on Moscow.

While in the Polish capital, Novak was also scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and parliamentary Speaker Elżbieta Witek.

The Polish prime minister said this month that the European Union, of which both Poland and Hungary are part, should hit Russia with the strongest possible punitive measures for its invasion of Ukraine.

Poland’s ambassador to the European’s Union told reporters last week that Hungary refused to support the bloc's proposed embargo on Russian oil during talks in Brussels.

The head of the European Commission, the EU's executive arm, last week proposed a phase-out of Russian oil as part of a sixth round of sanctions against Moscow for its assault on Ukraine.

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at the time that this would be “like an atomic bomb dropped on the Hungarian economy.”
