Poland’s PAP state news agency reported on Saturday that Timmermans told Antwerp-based Het Laatste Nieuws that although Ukraine needs to fulfil necessary criteria before it becomes an EU member, there is “an urgent geopolitical need” to speed up the process.
“I am sure that if we give Ukraine the means to do so, it will quickly send Putin a signal that he cannot win this war,” Timmermans was also quoted by PAP as saying.
According to PAP, Timmermans also told the newspaper that EU sanctions are seriously hurting Russia’s economy.
