Driver of dramatic bus crash in Warsaw detained

The driver of a bus that plunged off an overpass in Warsaw, killing one person and injuring over a dozen, has been detained, prosecutors said on Friday.

Four people sustained serious injuries in the accident on Thursday on the Polish capital’s northern Grota-Roweckiego Bridge.

The driver, who is in his twenties, is in hospital. Prosecutors are waiting for the results of toxicological tests on him.

Asked by reporters whether the driver had been under the influence of drugs, a spokeswoman for the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw said it would be premature to respond to the question.

After smashing though a barrier on Thursday, the front of the articulated bus toppled off an overpass, landing near a carriageway below, while the rear end remained stuck on the road above.
