The upper house of Poland’s parliament, the Senate, in early December passed a resolution to designate 2021 as the Year of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński.
The resolution paid tribute to the late Roman Catholic leader, who served as Primate of Poland and was a key figure in the nation’s 20th-century history.
Wyszyński was known for his resistance to Nazism and communism and for his efforts to protect the Catholic Church when Poland was under communist rule. Between 1953 and 1956 he was imprisoned by the communists.
Pope Francis in 2019 approved a decree recognizing a miracle attributed to Wyszyński, a step that put the late cardinal closer to possible sainthood.
Wyszyński died of cancer on May 28, 1981, at the age of 79.
