The criticism was sparked after the price of the most popular type of petrol stayed unchanged at the pump in the new year despite an expected hike due to the return of higher tax rates.

“These things drive Poles mad,” opposition leader Donald Tusk, a former prime minister, said in a video posted on social media on Wednesday.

"As it turned out, the ruling party inflated petrol prices thus robbing us in an extremely brazen way," he added.

Both PKN Orlen and the government have denied such claims.

Speaking earlier this week, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that “Orlen did not inflate fuel prices” last year.

He argued that "actually it is the leverage of Orlen" that guaranteed unchanged pump prices.

Radio Poland’s Michał Owczarek has the story.
