Poland's EU stint delivered deal to boost defence, official says

Poland's six-month rotating presidency of the European Union in the first half of the year delivered key milestones, including a deal to boost defence production across the bloc, a government official has said.

"We put defense issues on the agenda and succeeded in hammering out an official EU document," said Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, a Polish deputy minister for EU affairs, referring to the EUR 150 billion SAFE loan instrument intended to ramp up defence manufacturing.

Poland's term at the EU's helm from January 1 to June 30, 2025 was marked by a strong focus on security and economic challenges amid a shifting international landscape, according to officials.
