Polish Americans mark anniversary of 1944 Warsaw Uprising

The 81st anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising was commemorated over the weekend not only in Poland but also by Polish communities abroad.

One ceremony was held at the Polish Consulate in New York, attended by 97-year-old Jerzy Malewicz, who was just 16 when he took part in the fighting against Nazi German forces.

Other participants included Anna Maria Anders, daughter of famed Polish World War II General Władysław Anders, and American journalist Rita Cosby, whose father, Ryszard Kossobudzki, fought in the uprising.

"This is such a powerful story of the incredible courage of this Warsaw upriser we’ve heard from, but also of all of Poland," Cosby told Danuta Isler during the event.

"It's a reminder that freedom comes with a dear price," she added.
