On 15 July 1410, Polish and Lithuanian forces led by King Wladyslaw Jagiello defeated the German Teutonic Order in the Battle of Grunwald. For many years, knights in shining armour from many European countries have gathered at Grunwald to take part in a reenactment of the historic battle.
The Battle of Grunwald was one of the greatest battles of medieval Europe and is considered one of the most significant military victories in Polish history.
Fought on 15 July 1410, the battle delivered a resounding victory for Polish-Lithuanian forces, decisively weakening the Teutonic Order’s dominance and fundamentally altering the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe.
The reenactment was first held in 1998, and as in previous years, highlights included the staging of a scene in which two bare swords were handed to King Jagiełło by Teutonic heralds, an act often misunderstood as a demonstration of arrogance.
Over 1,400 reenactors arrived at the Fields of Grunwald to stage the famous battle for the 25th time.
Saturday’s event, which attracted around 100,000 spectators, featured actors on horseback and on foot, sporting heavy armour and playing the parts of knights, squires and archers on both sides.
