The leaders of the alliance's 32 member states met for a dinner on Tuesday evening ahead of the summit's main session on Wednesday.

Arriving at the summit, Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he would press for NATO's fuel pipeline network to be extended to the alliance's eastern flank, addressing what military planners see as a major logistics challenge in the event of a conflict with Russia.

"I will continue to push for the extension of the pipeline network—which currently ends at the former border between East and West Germany—into Central Europe and Poland," Nawrocki said.

"The dual-use potential of this infrastructure would also help strengthen the security of NATO's entire eastern flank," he added.

If approved, the pipeline extension would rank among Europe's largest infrastructure projects.
