The Democratic "blue wave" was welcomed by the government, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Wednesday declaring it a victory for democracy.

“Today, democracy won in America,” Tusk said with a smile.

"As President Donald Trump himself said just after the election, the Democrats did a good job, and I really could not agree more with him this time," he added, expressing hope that "the result will stabilise the situation also in our region."

In a deeply divided Poland, the Republican defeat drew a more muted response from the right-wing opposition and the office of conservative President Karol Nawrocki, an ally of Trump.
