Andrzej Sadoś made the announcement after a meeting with his counterparts from across the EU in the Belgian capital, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
He told the media: “Poland asked the French presidency of the EU, the European Commission and Hungary to brief the meeting on the current state of talks on the oil ban.”
The head of the European Commission last week proposed a phase-out of Russian oil as part of a sixth round of sanctions against the Kremlin for its invasion of Ukraine.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban said at the time that this would be “like an atomic bomb dropped on the Hungarian economy.”
Hungary remains opposed
Sadoś said on Wednesday: “Hungary is unable to approve the Russian oil embargo even though the European Union promised to exempt the country from the ban for many years.”
He added that the ambassadors’ meeting ended inconclusively due to Hungary’s stance, the PAP news agency reported.
He noted that Poland was calling for a ban on Russian oil and gas "as a necessary step to end the war."
Ukraine’s EU aspirations
Wednesday’s meeting also focused on Ukraine’s path to EU membership, Sadoś revealed.
He said he hoped EU leaders would send “a clear political message of support for Ukraine's European aspirations” when they meet for a summit next month.
Meanwhile, next week the EU executive is expected to outline plans “for managing Ukraine’s humanitarian crisis and for the country’s postwar reconstruction,” Sadoś told reporters.
Wednesday was day 77 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
