As a first step, the number of customs booths for articulated lorries from Ukraine has been doubled from five to 10 at the Korczowa-Krakovets border crossing, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported on Monday.
Within the next six weeks or so, traffic in the opposite direction will be streamlined as well, according to officials.
Poland and Ukraine are also working to boost the capacity of the Dorohusk-Jagodin border crossing, the IAR news agency reported.
Bilateral trade, global food security
Michał Dworczyk, a top aide to Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, told reporters: “We want to help our Ukrainian friends, but also to streamline transit through Poland, because it brings tangible benefits for Polish entrepreneurs.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said: “The food crisis is worsening around the world. What we are doing and will continue to do is not just for our bilateral relations. It matters for global food security.”
Kubrakov said the streamlined border crossings would be important as Ukraine seeks to export its grain to the world despite a Russian blockade of Black Sea ports.
Thanks to the improvements, wait times for drivers at the Polish border will be reduced significantly, officials told reporters.
