Speaking at a summit of NATO leaders in Madrid, Biden said"In Poland, we're going to establish a permanent headquarters of the U.S. 5th Army Corps and strengthen NATO interoperability across the entire eastern flank."

He told reporters that the United States would deploy additional troops to Romania on a rotating basis and enhance rotational deployments in the Baltic states.

Biden added that Washington would also send two additional F-35 squadrons to Britain, bolster air defence capabilities in Germany and Italy, and raise the number of navy destroyers in Spain to six from four.

He said the moves were intended to make sure NATO is ready to meet potential threats from air, land and sea.

"In a moment when Putin has shattered peace in Europe and attacked the very, very tenets of rule-based order, the United States and our allies are stepping up, proving NATO is more needed now than it ever has been, and it's as important as it has ever been," Biden said at a joint news conference with NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg.

In November 2020, a forward headquarters of the U.S. Army’s reactivated V Corps was launched in the western Polish city of Poznań to handle operational planning and bring more command and control support to missions in Europe, according to military officials.
