Volodymyr Zelensky made the remark as he addressed an international conference on the rebuilding of Ukraine, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Speaking by video link, the Ukrainian head of state told the meeting in Lugano, southern Switzerland, that the “reconstruction of Ukraine is the biggest contribution to the support of global peace.”

Zelensky went on to say: “This war isn’t just ours, it isn’t just local, taking place somewhere in eastern Europe. It’s Russia’s assault on everything that is of value to us.”

He added: “And so the rebuilding of Ukraine isn’t a local project, a project of one nation, but the common task of the whole democratic world, of all the countries that can describe themselves as civilised.”

The two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference has brought together a number of world leaders and NGOs with the purpose of preparing a roadmap for Ukraine’s postwar reconstruction, news outlets reported.

Zelensky said the conference and its results could become the "first big step towards a historic victory for the democratic world."

Monday was day 131 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
