The news of the attack was announced by Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Explosions rock Kyiv

Writing on the Telegram social media site, Yermak said: “Explosions in Kyiv. The capital has been attacked with kamikaze drones. The Russians believe this will help them, but such actions smack of desperation.”

At least three explosions were heard in Kyiv at 7 a.m. local time, after air raid sirens went off, according to news outlets.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that they happened in the central Shevchenkivskiy district, damaging several residential buildings and causing a fire in a non-residential building, the PAP news agency reported.

Klitschko said rescuers were on site, and urged residents to stay in air raid shelters, as cited by US broadcaster CNN.

Meanwhile, Yermak said Ukraine needed more air defence systems "as soon as possible," PAP reported.

Blasts continued to ring out in Kyiv later in the morning, as air raid sirens sounded, CNN said.

Klitschko confirmed two more explosions in the downtown Shevchenkivskiy area, according to the Ukrainska Pravda website.

Monday’s attack with disposable “kamikaze” drones came a week after Kyiv was struck by several Russian missiles during morning rush hour, as part of the Kremlin’s assault on cities across Ukraine that left 19 people dead, news outlets reported.

Monday is day 236 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
