Jarosław Kaczyński made the appeal at a meeting with the people of the southeastern Polish city of Przemyśl on Saturday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
‘NATO forces in Poland act as a deterrent’
Kaczyński was asked if the residents of the southeastern Polish province of Podkarpackie could feel secure amid Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and if more troops would be stationed in the region.
The leader of Poland’s governing Law and Justice party replied that at the moment,”the feeling of security can be high.”
He added: “If Russia decided to attack this land, mostly the city of Rzeszów and the Jasionka airport, it would mean a decision to start a war with NATO.”
According to the Law and Justice leader, such a move is “highly unlikely, unless the Russians succeed in Ukraine, while we don’t arm ourselves and count only on the forces provided by others.”
Kaczyński stressed that NATO forces stationed in Poland were already “big enough to have real military clout, not just political significance.

“They act as a deterrent,” he stated.
Kaczyński urged: “We must do everything to ensure that Ukraine wins. Because this will solve the problem of Russia’s aggressiveness, at least for many years.”
He told the Przemyśl audience: “Today it is possible, provided that Ukraine will be receiving appropriate assistance. And that we are not afraid, because fear is the worst adviser.”
The Law and Justice leader also noted that “the government plans to expand Poland’s armed forces to 300,000 soldiers,” adding that “the new troops will be stationed mainly to the south of the Vistula river,” the PAP news agency reported.
In July, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky granted the title of "Rescuer City" to Poland’s Przemyśl for its role in helping war-torn Ukraine and welcoming refugees.
Sunday is day 242 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
