Iran has become Russia’s key military ally: UK intelligence

Iran has become one of Russia’s top military backers, following Moscow’s decision to invade Ukraine, the UK Ministry of Defence said in its latest intelligence update.

In its briefing, provided on a daily basis, the UK defence officials wrote: "Iran’s support to the Russian military is likely to grow in the coming months: Russia is attempting to obtain more weapons, including hundreds of ballistic missile."

They added: "In return Russia is highly likely offering Iran an unprecedented level of military and technical support that is transforming their defence relationship."

Since November, various experts and institutions, including the Institute for the Study of War, a US think-tank, have started to report on Russia's increasing problems in replacing heavy weapons and maintaining munition stocks.
