During their meeting on Saturday, Zelensky thanked Metsola for her leadership in supporting Ukraine and for the EP’s resolution last June granting the country EU membership status, PAP wrote.

“Ukraine aims to complete the implementation of the European Commission's recommendations and begin negotiations on joining the EU this year,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram after the talks.

Ukraine obtained EU candidate status in June after applying for membership a few days into Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24 last year.

EU membership has long been a key aspiration for Ukraine, which is reflected in the Ukrainian Constitution among the main goals.

Metsola promised that cooperation between Ukraine and the EP would "only grow stronger."

This has been Metsola's second visit to Ukraine since the outbreak of the war.

It comes less than a month after Zelensky addressed the European Parliament in person, and just days after the country marked the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
