The air raid was carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles early on Tuesday morning, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
It was Russia’s third attack on Kyiv over the past 24 hours, including a daytime strike on Monday, officials said.
In contrast to most previous raids, the attack involved only Iranian-made Shahed drones and no missiles, the Reuters news agency reported.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app: "A massive attack! Do not leave shelters."
One dead, four injured
One person died and four others were wounded when debris from a destroyed Russian projectile hit a high-rise apartment building sparking a fire, according to Ukrainian officials cited by Reuters.
The fire destroyed the top two floors of the building in the Ukrainian capital's Holosiivskyi district, and there may be people under the rubble, Kyiv’s military administration said.
All emergency services were working on the site, officials told reporters.
According to The Kyiv Independent website, debris that fell over Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district caused a fire in a house and damaged cars, while three cars caught fire in the central Pecherskyi district.
Meanwhile, debris also fell on the forested area in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district, an enterprise in the Sviatoshynskyi district, and a non-residential building in the Podilskyi district, officials said.
No casualties have been reported in these districts, The Kyiv Independent said.
Air raid alerts were active in the Ukrainian capital for around three hours, it added.
Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on Telegram: "The attack was massive, came from different directions, in several waves."
Tuesday’s air raid was Russia’s 17th assault on the Ukrainian capital in May, Reuters reported.
Most of these attacks took place at night, using a combination of drones and missiles, according to officials.
Popko said earlier this week: “"With these constant attacks, the enemy seeks to keep the civilian population in deep psychological tension."
Ukraine shoots down 29 drones in Kyiv area
In the course of Russia’s air attack early on Tuesday night, Ukraine’s air defences took down 29 of the 31 Shahed kamikaze drones launched, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.
Between 11:30 p.m. on Monday and 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Russia fired a total of 31 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 attack drones against Ukraine, "from the north and south," Ukraine’s Air Force said.
Ukraine’s air defence destroyed 29 of these attack UAVs, according to officials.
Most of the drones were destroyed on the outskirts of Kyiv and over the capital itself, Ukrainska Pravda reported.
Drone attack on Moscow?
Meanwhile, drones hit several buildings in the Russian capital Moscow on Tuesday, causing minor damage and forcing some people to evacuate their homes, Reuters reported.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the drone attack had caused “slight” damage to buildings and there were no reports of any casualties, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Two people sought medical assistance and none were seriously injured, according to the mayor.
Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, said on the Telegram app that several UAVs had been shot down on their approach to Moscow, according to Reuters.
According to Russian state news agency RIA, some residents of a building on Moscow's Profsoyuznaya Street were being evacuated.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the apparent attack on the Russian capital, Reuters reported.
Earlier this month, two UAVs exploded over the Kremlin, in what Russia described as Ukraine’s attempt to assassinate President Vladimir Putin, but Kyiv denied responsibility, according to news outlets.
Tuesday is day 461 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
