"Of course, the issue of people at the front is the number one issue," Zelensky said in an interview with German television broadcaster ARD, as cited by Ukraine's Ukrinform news agency.
He added: "We have 880,000. We have a million-strong army. And 30 million people are working... So when we talk about all the people in Ukraine, they are defending Europe and the world."
Zelensky told ARD that many people left Ukraine "for one reason or another, primarily because they were saving their children" during Russia's invasion, but some of them later came back, Ukrinform reported.
"And today, we are grateful to those who have returned," he said. "Because we need not only to fight in Ukraine; we need to build Ukraine."
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
Monday is day 705 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
