The attack also damaged social infrastructure in the city, about 150 km from the capital Kyiv, the Reuters news agency reported.
"The enemy hit with three missiles almost in the city centre," regional governor Vyacheslav Chaus said, as cited by Reuters.
"There are victims among civilians and many injured," he added on the Telegram messaging app.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its drone and missile attacks on cities across Ukraine, targeting the country's energy facilities and other critical infrastructure, Reuters reported.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said on Wednesday that Russia "launched two missile strikes, 64 air strikes, and 75 MLRS [multiple launch rocket system] attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements" over the past day.
It added that the attacks "killed and wounded civilians."
A total of "68 combat engagements took place at the frontline," the Ukrainian military reported.
The Ukrainian General Staff said that Ukrainian troops "continue to actively inflict losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation troops, and exhausting the enemy all along the line of contact."
It added that the Ukrainian air force launched air strikes on six concentrations of Russian troops and two command posts.
More than 110 settlements in Ukraine's Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson and Mykolaiv regions came under Russian artillery fire, according to Kyiv's military.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
