On Wednesday, a state of emergency was announced in Kursk Oblast (in central western Russia). The day before, Russia alleged that Ukrainian forces had crossed its southern border and launched an assault in the area with several hundred troops, supported by tanks and armored vehicles. Kyiv has yet to comment on these claims.
Gen. Polko highlighted that Ukraine is adapting and improving its strategies by learning from past mistakes and pinpointing vulnerabilities along the front lines. He noted that this approach has caught the Russians off guard, and achieving success often hinges on exploiting unexpected opportunities.
“Ukraine, by employing smart military strategies despite having fewer soldiers than the Russians, operates like British Admiral Horatio Nelson—penetrating enemy lines to disrupt, instill fear, seize the initiative, and set the terms of engagement,” he assessed.
Such actions, according to the former GROM commander, boost Ukrainian soldiers' morale while weakening that of the Russians. Additionally, they divert attention and force the enemy to redeploy troops from other, possibly more critical, parts of the front.
