In a recent interview with British broadcaster Sky News, Duda said: "If anyone is able to force the end of Russia's war, it is most likely only the president of the United States."

Citing what he described as Europe's failure to secure peace in Ukraine, Duda argued that responsibility for resolving the conflict now lies with Washington.

Duda told Sky News' Diana Magnay: "The question is whether [Trump] will be determined enough to do that in a way—because it is also very important here in Europe, being a neighbour of Russian aggression against Ukraine—that the peace is fair and lasting."

Duda also said in the interview that he hoped a large US military base in Poland, dubbed "Fort Trump," would eventually become a reality.

Referring to his meeting with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in February, he said: "We discussed strengthening the American presence in Poland, and I mentioned the idea of creating a huge base of US troops. Then, we called it Fort Trump. I do still hope that this idea will be implemented."

Duda, who has served as president since 2015, said in late February that Poland's close relationship with the United States was the most significant success of his two-term presidency.

Poland is set to vote for a new president in May. Duda is not eligible to seek a third term under election rules.

His second term in office ends on August 6.
