He made the statement before a meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Lviv, western Ukraine, to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

"Ukraine is defending Europe, defending freedom, and we owe it solidarity in this struggle," Sikorski said, emphasizing the importance of supporting Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression.

He added that the discussions in Lviv would focus on the creation of a tribunal affiliated with the Council of Europe to document and prosecute crimes against humanity.

Sikorski noted that throughout history, many leaders have ignored such initiatives, yet those responsible for war crimes in the former Yugoslavia were brought to trial in The Hague.

He stressed that the presence of EU foreign ministers in Lviv was a strong sign of solidarity with Ukraine and a clear message to the Kremlin that the memory of victory over Nazi Germany should not be used to justify Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

Sikorski also commented on the participation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico in a Kremlin-hosted WWII victory event, calling the decision unacceptable.

“Today, we celebrate Europe Day with Ukraine and its people. In a family, both joys and hardships are shared. Together with foreign ministers, we stand united with Ukraine for a lasting peace,” wrote the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, on social media.

The gathering in Lviv also saw participation from EU officials and top diplomats from Britain, Norway, Moldova and North Macedonia, the Polish foreign ministry said.
