In a statement posted on Sunday on his official X account (formerly Twitter), Zelensky said Ukraine expects Russia to halt hostilities starting Monday for at least 30 days. The ceasefire demand, previously endorsed by the leaders of Poland, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, is seen as a precondition for meaningful negotiations with Moscow.
Zelensky stressed that only a complete and lasting ceasefire can provide the necessary basis for diplomacy and significantly advance prospects for peace. He called on Russia to deliver a clear response, insisting the war and the killing must end.
The Ukrainian president also warned that Ukrainian forces are prepared to respond "symmetrically" to ensure fairness if Russia refuses to halt its aggression.
Zelensky noted that Ukraine’s international partners have repeatedly assured him they are ready to tighten sanctions on Russia should President Vladimir Putin reject the ceasefire proposal.
No sign of easfire as Russian attacs intensify in eastern Ukraine
Polish volunteer Monika Andruszewska, reporting for Polish Radio from near the front line in Ukraine’s Donetsk region, says there is no sign of a ceasefire, with Russian rocket artillery attacks intensifying over the past 24 hours.
According to Anruszewska, Russian forces used Shahed drones overnight from Sunday to Monday, while recent hours saw air raid alerts due to bomb strikes launched from occupied Luhansk region.
