The attack took place only hours after the first face-to-face peace talks between the two sides in more than three years ended without a ceasefire.

Local authorities said the drone struck the civilian vehicle near the border town of Bilopillia on Friday evening, wounding four other passengers. Photos released by Ukraine’s national police showed the dark-blue van with its roof torn off and windows shattered.

“All the deceased were civilians, and the Russians could not have failed to understand what type of vehicle they were targeting,” Zelenskyy wrote on the social-media platform X.

“This was a deliberate killing of civilians. Pressure must be exerted on Russia to stop the killings. Without tougher sanctions, Russia will not seek real diplomacy.”
