At least three people were killed and 17 others injured, according to local emergency services, who warned the number of casualties may rise as rescue operations continue.
The barrage, which began in the early hours of Saturday, triggered dozens of explosions across the city. Ukrainian media described the strike as among the most intense in recent memory.
The blasts caused fires and extensive damage to upper floors of multi-storey apartment blocks and private homes. Emergency workers said people could still be trapped under the rubble.
The attack comes amid a reported wave of Ukrainian drone strikes on military targets across multiple Russian regions, though there were no immediate reports of Russian losses.
Military analysts said the escalation in Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities may be a retaliation for recent sabotage operations by Ukraine’s Security Service, including attacks on Russian strategic bombers.
