Ukraine will receive a €76 million European Union grant to lay nearly 73 km of European-standard track between Lviv’s Sknyliv station and the Mostyska II border crossing with Poland, Kuleba told reporters on Thursday.

He said the plan by state rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia had been approved by the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility committee, calling it the first full-scale segment of a direct rail corridor linking Ukraine with the rest of Europe.

Switching to the 1,435-mm gauge will cut travel times, ease congestion at border checkpoints and boost transit traffic, Kuleba added.

“This shows Ukraine is already part of the European transport network, not a future addition,” he said.

Kuleba called the project crucial for keeping people and goods moving during the full-scale Russian invasion, which has closed airports, ports and damaged other infrastructure.
