The Operational Command of Poland's Armed Forces said in a statement that "all necessary procedures have been initiated" to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.

It added that it was "monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis."

The statement also said that Polish and allied aircraft were activated early on Wednesday, with the Operational Command taking steps to ensure safety in areas near the Ukrainian border.

The alert was in effect until around 8 a.m., when the Operational Command noted a decreased threat of Russian strikes on Ukrainian regions bordering Poland.

“We thank NATO Air Command and the Royal Netherlands Air and Space Force for their support," the Operational Command said, adding that Dutch F-35 fighter jets helped ensure the safety of Polish airspace.

Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine overnight into Wednesday, targeting various regions across the country, according to officials.

Ukraine's air force said it shot down 430 of 502 drones and 21 of 24 missiles launched by Russia overnight. Three missiles and 69 drones hit in 14 locations, and debris fell in 14 locations, it added.

Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, starting the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.

Wednesday is day 1,287 of the war.
